Woman Slashes Painting Worth Millions

A visitor to an Austrian museum pulled a pocket knife from her purse and repeatedly slashed a painting by US artist Roy Lichtenstein worth millions of euros, police said. The woman, a 35-year-old Munich, Germany, resident, was visiting the Kunsthaus Bregenz exhibition “Roy Lichtenstein — Classic of the New” Saturday afternoon when she vandalised the painting “Nude in Mirror.” She made four cuts in the painting, each measuring about 30 centimetres, police said in a statement late on Saturday.

Other museum visitors and museum guards held the woman until she could be taken to the police station. The woman, who would be examined by a court psychiatrist, offered no explanation for her behaviour, police said. State broadcaster ORF reported the woman had attacked two police officers during questioning. The two officers suffered unspecified injuries. The woman’s purse also contained red spray paint and a screwdriver, ORF reported. Sunday was the last day of the special exhibition.
